About Shams

A voice for survivors of detention and families of the missing in Rural Damascus.

Our mission

Shams works for the dignity of survivors of detention and families of the missing, and their right to support, truth and justice. We want their voices to be heard and for them to help define the support they need.

This introduction is a draft for organizational review. Program descriptions explain proposed areas of work; they do not confirm that a particular service is currently available.

Six proposed goals

The following is draft wording for review, not a quotation of the goals in the registration decision. It must be checked against the official document before approval.

  1. Support survivors of detention and families of the missing as they rebuild their social lives.
  2. Help people access psychosocial support according to needs and available resources.
  3. Help make health care and appropriate referrals more accessible.
  4. Support education, vocational training and economic independence.
  5. Keep the missing and their families’ right to truth in public view.
  6. Encourage community participation and advocacy for justice and reparations.
